Talking to Your Family About Joining Up

Breaking the news to your family that you’ve decided to join the military can be hard for them – they haven’t had time to process the information like you have. Here are a few ways to make the conversation go smoothly so you can get on and get excited about your new career:
Be Ready: for questions, that is. Your family will want to know everything from your pay to how dangerous your specific post will be so come prepared with brochures and information. The more specific the better they’ll feel.
Have Communication Options: if your family’s worried about missing you get some solutions prepared. Talk to them about getting clear wireless internet so they can email you from anywhere and discuss prepaid cell phones as an alternate means of communication. Skyping is always an option, too.
Listen to Them: your first instinct might be to get defensive if they question your choice but stand firm and instead listen to their concerns. Hear them out and relay that you understand – make sure they know you’ve made up your mind, though, and won’t be changing it anytime soon.
